In terms of stature, the Dell EMC PowerEdge T140 is a relatively small mini tower measuring 360mm x 175mm x 454mm. Front I / O does not include traditional hot-swappable bays. Instead, there is USB and service connectivity with a thin optical drive bay.

Some servers of this class are fully built. The sheet metal is wrapped around a basic motherboard sometimes with screws and sharp metal in this category of machines, but not with the PowerEdge T140. The PowerEdge T140 indicates for the first time that low cost does not necessarily mean that you have to abandon the company's quality principles to open the chassis. Here there is a nice easy-to-use locking mechanism. In contrast, many competing systems, even large suppliers, use a simple sheet metal side panel held in place by screws. While this may seem like the most unimportant feature at first glance, it is clearly an additional cost that the Dell EMC product team has properly designed to provide the user with a quality experience.

Inside the chassis we can see the basic structure of the system. There is a side mATX motherboard, an ATX size power supply, an optical bay and four 3.5 ″ drive bays. The 3.5-inch bays are wired and in bins without tools. These are not traditional hot-swap bays, as it is more complex to exchange disks. At the same time, this type of solution is common in this category of machines and it is generally quite easy for a novice IT administrator or a reasonable on-site employee to swap drives. Another quality area is that the player connections are labeled with large letters, which makes them easier to read. For the visually impaired who install discs, the small step of having large labels makes the process easier.

Typically, the integrated SATA controller on the motherboard is used for storage on the extremely low cost segment. We can see a SFF-8087 header that can provide up to four SATA III channels at 6.0 Gbps. The SFF-8087 connector is often associated with SAS, but this port is only SATA. You can also see a traditional 7-pin SATA III 6.0 gbps SATA port, labeled for the optical drive or other hard drive. PCIe connectivity is provided via a series of four slots. We have a PERC card illustrated here. One note is that there is no integrated PCI M.2 slot. M.2 has become a popular form factor for NVMe SSDs on servers. Dell EMC allows the use of a BOSS card with one or two M.2 SATA drives for booting, but NVMe drives have a different use case and offer more performance.

With this server class, I / O connectivity is limited by the underlying Intel platform. If you want more PCIe connectivity, you'll use high-end products such as the Dell EMC PowerEdge T440 based on Intel Xeon Scalable. For power, Dell EMC uses a 365W unit rated 80Plus Gold. For supplies below 500W, 80Plus Gold is always considered very good. Some competitors in this class use bronze or unclassified power supplies. We applaud Dell EMC for choosing an industry standard power supply to provide buyers with lower operating costs. The rear I / O panel has a traditional serial port, '' one VGA port and four USB 2.0 ports for legacy I / O. We also get two USB 3.0 ports each located under one of the two 1GbE ports. Dell EMC has taken it a step further by having an iDRAC port dedicated to out of band management, which we will focus on in a later section.

Before finishing the material presentation section, another area to mention is the quality of the documentation. Dell EMC has solid online documentation for IT administrators. Designed for peripheral deployments, the Dell EMC PowerEdge T140 is also designed to be repaired by non-IT personnel on site. Here, simple features such as stickers with relevant images and service details make a big difference.

If you look at a large number of servers like we do, it's pretty easy to see that the Dell EMC PowerEdge T140 is designed to be economical. At the same time, the PowerEdge team managed to balance costs while allowing the lower cost system to feel well built it. We have highlighted small features, such as the locking mechanism and tags, that contribute to the overall quality of the PowerEdge solution compared to other solutions.
