Development:

Heck and Seraphine developed the Microsoft PDA's vision, mission, and long-term plan, and built an experienced team to design Cortana. Leading analysts of these early efforts are Microsoft researchers Dilek Haqqani-Tour, Gohan Tour, Andreas Stolke and Malcolm Sallyni, search engine developer Madu Chinintakunta, and user experience designer Lisa Stefelman. To develop Cortana Digital Assistant, the team interviewed personal assistants. These interviews have inspired a number of unique features for Cortana, including the auxiliary notebook feature. Initially, it was supposed to be just a quote and a code name, but the user voice application for Windows Phone proved popular, revealing the code name.

Some UK devices from O2 received the Lumia Denim update without this feature, but this was later reported as an error and Microsoft has since corrected it.

Cortana integrates with services such as Foursquare and LIFX smart lights to advise restaurants and local attractions.
